I was reading the Sonlight blog and there was a post about logic and reason not being enough. A good education only gets you so far. You will often be hampered by your presuppositions.
My husband is an apologist—an adamant defender of the faith. As such, he believes God is consistent. Because we can count on Him to be faithful to His own character, we can use reason to come to Him. We can’t understand everything, but we can work out Truth with the minds God gave us.
As a wife to a lover of reason, you can imagine how this post caught my eye! The author’s point was that part of education needs to be honest self-examination. We all have presuppositions. The trouble comes when we are blind to them. It closes us off and reason no longer carries truth.
As we strive to teach our children, it is important to instill a love for learning, open minds and enough humility to allow one to change one’s mind. With that heavy load, it is a good thing we have a lifetime to learn it!
